Music Lab
Electronic devices have opened a new
and exciting dimension to music study in the 20th century. Nationally,
more and more teachers are reaping the benefits of having a music lab
to promote total musical growth in conjunction with private lessons.
The MSC has incorporated many advanced technologies into its total music
program. The MSC music lab is equipped with digital pianos with
interfacing MIDI units and sequencers, 4 PC computers with more than
150 pieces of music software, Listening Station with great performance
CDs, Music Library with reference books, and a camcorder and VCR for
the most comprehensive way to help students learn and progress.
Digital Pianos and Sequencers
The digital piano is a full keyboard
with weighted keys, possessing a MIDI unit that produces a kaleidoscope
of musical sounds and various rhythms. The built-in sequencer is a sophisticated
recording device. Different sounds can be recorded on separate
tracks to create colorful accompaniments and can be replayed at any
speed without changing the pitch. The sequencer is also an excellent
learning tool. Students can record and critique their own performances.
Using prerecorded repertoire, muting functions allows the students to
mute one voice and play it themselves for practice. A rhythm pattern
can also be added to a piece that requires a steady tempo, or the teacher
can pre-record the second part for duet practice. Students can
also have fun improvising to a drum line.
Computers and Music Software
With the PC computers and our extensive
library of software, students can learn composition, improvisation,
music theory, music appreciation, music history, rhythm, ear training,
and sight-reading in a self-paced and fun way.
Camcorder and VCR
A camcorder and VCR give students
revealing impressions of their technique, performance, and stage presence.
Regular use of the camcorder can solve many problems before they become
harmful habits. Matters of posture and movement can easily be
self-corrected by seeing a recording of a performance.
